2006 IBC Hazardous Materials

Description:

Examines the application of code requirements in the 2006 IBC (specifically Chapters 3 and 4) and the 2006 IFC to determine compliance for the storage, display, handling and dispensing of hazardous materials. Discusses IBC requirements that are driven by the Group H occupancy classifications assigned to the building are outlined and IFC requirements that are driven by specific materials stored or used are discussed. Provides certain controls applicable to any materials deemed hazardous. Provides information on the design of any building utilizing hazardous materials requiring coordination between the building and fire codes. Discusses building or structure that might contain hazardous materials, regardless of quantity, and its compliance with all applicable provisions of both codes.

Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be better able to:

Locate and describe applicable hazardous materials in the 2006 IBC and the 2006 IFC.
Define control areas and identify when control areas can be applied as an alternative to Group H Classification.
Define mercantile display and determine how mercantile display can be applied as an alternative to Group H Classification.
Determine when a building or structure should be classified as a Group H.
Describe how each Group H classification impacts corresponding height and area limitation, mixed uses and means of egress for a building or structure.
Classify materials as to appropriate hazard and determine allowable exempt amounts for each material.
